DKPD seeks person of interest in double shooting, leads in murdered 18-year-old

Sketch 33

The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) is seeking the public’s help in identifying a “person of interest” in connection with a double shooting in Clarkston that left an 18-year-old, Demarco Williams, dead.

Investigators released the sketch today (March 8), hoping the public can help them crack the case, which happened more than six months ago. Authorities believe the person approached Williams and his mother just hours before the shooting. The police, along with the family, are appealing to the public to help locate the person of interest, police spokesperson Michaela Vincent stated in a news release.

The shooting took place on Aug. 26, 2020 around 3:30 a.m. as Williams and two others were sitting at a pavilion at an apartment complex located at 751 N. Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston.

A 16-year-old victim who survived the shooting, told police that three unknown black males approached  him, Williams and another “kid” nicknamed “Smoke” while they were sitting at the pavilion and began shooting at them. The 16-year-old was struck but managed to run to an apartment and knock on the door. When police arrived on the scene, the 16-year-old was transported to Grady Hospital, where he was treated. Williams, however, died from injuries en route to Grady Hospital, according to a police incident report. Police have been unable to locate “Smoke.”

Joey Williams, Demarco Williams’ father, told police he heard several gunshots and walked outside where he saw one suspect toting an AK47 rifle and another suspect with a handgun as they were fleeing the scene.

Other witnesses told investigators they saw a dark gray Toyota Camry pull off after the shooting.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or the DKPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit at 770-724-7850.
